About New Mexico Public Schools

New Mexico has historically ranked at or near the bottom of national education rankings, with high poverty rates, a large Native American and Hispanic student population facing compounding disadvantages, and persistent underfunding from a state revenue base dominated by volatile oil and gas receipts. The 2018 Yazzie/Martinez v. State of New Mexico ruling declared the state's education system unconstitutional and prompted a historic infusion of new funding — billions in additional education dollars over the following five years — along with mandates for expanded early childhood programs, Native American language revitalization, and bilingual education support. Albuquerque Public Schools, the state's largest district, serves a majority-minority student body with significant multilingual learner representation. New Mexico uses the NMSBA assessment.
