About Oklahoma Public Schools

Oklahoma's education system has been under financial strain for more than a decade, with years of per-pupil spending cuts contributing to a teacher shortage crisis that erupted into a historic statewide teacher walkout in 2018. The walkout succeeded in securing a $6,000 average teacher pay raise, but the state continues to face recruitment and retention challenges, particularly in rural districts. Oklahoma City and Tulsa public schools serve the largest urban populations with high rates of low-income students and English learners. The state has expanded school choice significantly in recent years, including a universal ESA program. Oklahoma uses the OSTP (Oklahoma School Testing Program) for accountability and has emphasized literacy reform through its Reading Sufficiency Act.
