About Montana Public Schools

Montana operates 387 school districts — more than almost any state for its population — with many serving fewer than 100 students in remote ranch and reservation communities. The state's funding formula includes rural and isolated school adjustments, and per-pupil spending is above the national median when these adjustments are accounted for. Montana's Native American student population, approximately 12% of enrollment, is concentrated in seven reservation-based districts and urban Indian communities in Billings and Great Falls; persistent achievement gaps and culturally responsive curriculum have been ongoing policy priorities under the Indian Education for All mandate, which requires schools to incorporate Native American history and culture into all curricula. The state uses the MontCAS assessment suite.
